Profiles using a link-in-bio tool averaged 17% higher engagements per day than profiles that didn't, according to a SproutLink analysis of 47,579 public Instagram profiles and more than 320,000 SproutLink posts. The 2022 study, recontextualized in Sprout Social's 2026 guidance, turns a familiar meme — "click link in bio" — into a measurable revenue lever.
The mechanics are simple. Instagram doesn't allow clickable links in captions or comments, so the bio is the only native spot where a profile can drive direct traffic to an external site. Since 2023, Instagram has allowed up to five clickable URLs there, up from a single link. Only the first link displays prominently, though; users must tap to expand the rest — an extra step that can cost the click.
Why the bio link still matters in 2026
Instagram now counts 3 billion monthly active users. Sprout Social's 2026 Social Media Content Strategy Report found 65% of social media users hold an Instagram profile, second only to Facebook. In the U.S., 50% of adults use it, and that rises to 80% among adults aged 18 to 29.
Scale doesn't guarantee traffic, though. Because of Instagram's linking restrictions, most interactions end inside the app itself, and brands lose the chance to convert. Some 60% of consumers interact with brand content on Instagram multiple times per week — engagement that goes nowhere without a clear exit path. The link in bio is that exit path.
What the data shows by industry and size
The 2022 SproutLink analysis found the engagement lift held across sectors, with the biggest winners among smaller players:
- Small businesses: 23% higher average engagements per day, ahead of mid-market brands (22%) and enterprises (13%).
- Consumer products: 41% higher average followers gained per day and 29% higher average daily unique impressions.
- Financial services: 40% higher average daily impressions.
- Retail and leisure: lift across the board, driven by multiple simultaneous products, promotions and events.
The report ties the gains to engagement as the top success metric: the 2025 Sprout Social Index found engagement is the number one measure marketing leaders use for social performance.
Native links or a dedicated tool?
Instagram's native bio field handles five links. For brands running two campaigns at a time with simple funnels, that's enough. Dedicated link-in-bio tools offer far more: 1,000+ or unlimited links, branded landing pages, click analytics covering views, clicks and CTR, scheduling integration with publishing tools, and post embedding.
Setting up a native link takes four steps: open "Edit profile," tap "Links," tap "Add link" with a destination URL and title, then confirm and repeat. Links can be reordered so the most recent or relevant one shows first. Story link stickers complement the bio link for timely content.
From discovery to checkout
Instagram is the #1 platform for product discovery, per the 2026 Content Strategy Report — over a quarter of social users across every generation turn to it to find their next purchase. With U.S. social commerce revenue reaching $104 billion in 2025, the gap between discovery and purchase is where money leaks out.
Shoppable link-in-bio pages close that gap. Four Seasons, for example, runs a SproutLink page mirroring its Instagram grid: tapping the Mallorca image lands visitors on the Four Seasons Mallorca at Formentor booking page; tapping the Mykonos image opens the Mykonos booking page. No site search, no hunting — a few taps from discovery to booking.
How practitioners should track it
Sprout recommends two layers of measurement: built-in tool analytics that show page views and clicks at the post level, and UTM parameters (source, medium, campaign, content) to attribute clicks from bio, Stories and DMs back to specific posts. SproutLink applies UTM tags automatically when link tracking rules are enabled.
Best practices from the report: put the highest-intent link first, use action-driven CTAs like "Request a Demo" instead of "Click Here," match landing pages to the post that promised them, cap options at five to seven links, and A/B test order, banners and button text over a few hundred clicks or a two-week window.
SproutLink ships on all Sprout plans, including the Essentials tier, with a 30-day free trial. As Instagram's 3 billion users keep discovering products in-feed, the brands that shorten the path from post to purchase are the ones positioned to capture the next $104 billion cycle.
