- Meta announced Tuesday a new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server connecting AI agents like Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT to the WhatsApp Business Platform
- The agent can create accounts, verify phone numbers, register Cloud API access, build and edit messaging templates, and test messages and webhooks
- The server joins Meta's existing MCP lineup for ad management and app configuration, with rivals including PayPal, Stripe, Google and Microsoft offering similar MCP servers
Meta announced on Tuesday that developers can now delegate WhatsApp Business messaging setup entirely to an AI agent of their choosing — Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT — through a new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server that connects coding agents directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
The change targets a workflow Meta itself describes as cumbersome. Previously, setting up WhatsApp Business messaging required developers to jump between the Developer Console, Meta's Business Manager, the API reference, and their code editor. Now a developer can describe what needs doing in a chat, and the agent executes the configuration.
What the agent actually does
According to Meta, the AI agent handles the busywork that dominates onboarding: creating the company's WhatsApp Business account, adding and verifying its phone number, registering it for Cloud API access, and checking the business's Terms of Service status.
The delegation extends past initial setup. Businesses can describe a messaging template they want built, have the agent edit an existing one, test messages and webhooks, and monitor issues that previously failed quietly — Terms of Service compliance, payment method status, and Business Verification among them.
Meta also positions the release as complementary to an existing tool. During setup, developers can use the company's other server, the Meta Social Technologies MCP, to discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors.
Context and rollout scope
The WhatsApp Business Tools MCP expands Meta's existing lineup of MCP servers, which already covered ad management and app configuration monitoring. MCP — Model Context Protocol — is the emerging standard for letting AI agents securely interact with external services, and Meta is joining a broad field: PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft all offer MCP servers of their own.
The announcement landed alongside news of Meta's new AI-focused subscription plans, signaling a coordinated push to weave agentic tooling into its business products rather than treating it as a standalone experiment.
What it means for practitioners
For agencies and developers managing multiple client accounts, the practical value is onboarding speed. Tasks that consumed developer hours — phone verification, Cloud API registration, template creation, webhook testing — can now run through a conversational interface, reducing the tool-hopping that Meta acknowledged as a pain point.
The monitoring capability deserves attention too. Silent failures in payment methods, ToS status, or Business Verification can interrupt customer messaging without warning, and automated checks catch these earlier than manual audits typically do.
The move also signals where Meta expects the developer workflow to head: if setup, templates, and monitoring are agent-delegable, deeper operational control of business messaging could follow. Meta has not announced timelines for any further capabilities, but the trajectory from its ads and app-configuration MCP servers to this release suggests WhatsApp Business tooling will keep expanding along agentic lines.
