At a glance

  • Motorway sees new content cited by AI assistants within 24 hours of publication, marketing director Cassie Hall said at Semrush Spotlight London on Tuesday.
  • Motorway is testing ChatGPT ads, which launched in the U.K. in May.
  • Flo Health employs a manager dedicated solely to LLM discoverability, head of brand marketing Georgia Jones said.
  • Flo's discoverability manager works with every channel owner during media planning and messaging builds.
  • Neither brand shared referral volumes, conversions, or budget figures tied to AI citations.

Motorway, the U.K. car-selling platform, now watches large language model outputs in real time and can see new content cited by AI assistants within 24 hours of publication. Cassie Hall, Motorway's marketing and brand director, disclosed the figure on Tuesday at the Semrush Spotlight event in London.

"We can publish new content and see it being cited within 24 hours," Hall said. The company pairs that monitoring with tests of ChatGPT ads, an ad product that launched in the U.K. in May.

Motorway is not an outlier. Brands are increasingly working to get recommended by AI assistants such as ChatGPT, and the practice is producing a defined playbook. The tactics named at the event include tracking the answer engines' outputs, hiring dedicated discoverability staff, and holding a strict line on brand consistency across channels.

Who owns AI discoverability?

Period-tracking app Flo Health offers one answer. The company employs a manager dedicated entirely to LLM discoverability, according to Georgia Jones, Flo's head of brand marketing, who spoke on a separate panel at the same event.

That manager works with every channel owner when media plans and messaging are being built, Jones said. In practice, this means AI visibility is treated as a planning-stage concern rather than a post-hoc measurement exercise.

What does this change for marketers?

For practitioners, the emerging model carries three practical implications:

  • Monitoring is now operational, not occasional. Motorway's 24-hour citation window shows LLM outputs can be tracked with the same cadence as search rankings or paid performance.
  • Headcount is shifting. Flo's dedicated LLM discoverability manager signals that answer-engine visibility has become a role, not a side task folded into SEO.
  • Consistency is a ranking factor of its own. Rigorous brand consistency across channels, cited at the event, functions as the substrate that makes AI citations repeatable.

Speculation versus confirmation

Two claims come directly from named executives on stage: Hall's 24-hour citation window and the existence of Flo's dedicated discoverability manager. Both are official, first-hand accounts.

Broader framing — that these tactics constitute a general "playbook" for all brands — reflects the event's framing rather than measured results. Neither Motorway nor Flo shared referral volumes, conversion data, or budget figures tied to AI citations. Marketers weighing investment should treat the 24-hour figure as one company's observation, not a benchmark.

The ChatGPT ads test is likewise early. The U.K. launch in May gives brands a limited window of performance data, and Motorway disclosed no results from its trials.

The direction of travel

The structural signal is clear regardless: answer-engine visibility has moved from experiment to staffing and tooling decisions at two consumer brands with large audiences. As ChatGPT's ad products expand from their May U.K. debut, expect citation tracking and dedicated discoverability roles to move from early-adopter tactics to standard elements of the media plan.
