- Reddit announced the rollout on Wednesday, with global availability planned over the next few weeks.
- The redesigned homepage offers two options: For You and Following.
- For You combines joined-community posts with recommendations tailored to users’ interests.
- Users can switch feeds, and Reddit will reopen the last feed they viewed.
- Instagram, X, Threads, and Facebook already use For You-style recommendation feeds.
Reddit announced Wednesday that its new homepage experience is rolling out globally over the next few weeks. It gives users two choices:
- For You: Posts from communities users have joined, mixed with recommendations tailored to their interests.
- Following: Only posts from communities they have joined.
Reddit says the split should help people discover relevant communities and conversations they might otherwise miss, while fostering connection, participation, and belonging.
What does the feed split change for practitioners?
For creators and community teams, the change is chiefly about where discovery appears, not a guaranteed distribution boost. “For You” may expose a post to people who did not join its community, while “Following” preserves a narrower, joined-community experience. Reddit gave no ranking rules, test results, reach forecasts, or creator analytics, so the size of any audience gain remains unproven.
Some users who encountered the new feed during initial testing expressed frustration, particularly about recommended content entering the home experience. Their reaction remains anecdotal: Reddit supplied no complaint totals, survey results, or comparison with later testing, so it cannot establish broad sentiment.
Reddit says users can switch manually, and the app will reopen on whichever feed they last viewed. The company did not provide country-by-country dates or explain whether every account receives both feeds at once. For operators, the switch restores some control, but it does not show how often users will visit each option.
Reddit is adopting a “For You” format popularized by TikTok, joining Instagram, X, Threads, and Facebook in making recommendations central to the home experience. The company has long recommended posts from outside users’ subscribed communities, but the redesign gives those recommendations a separate homepage feed, making algorithmic discovery more visible.
In a blog post, Reddit wrote: “This new feed experience is a first step in helping drive discovery that leads to something novel and relevant – an idea, a connection, a unique perspective, or even a new interest.” The company added: “A more human internet is not just something you sit back and watch, it is something you find value in and want to participate in.”
The announcement identifies connection, participation, and belonging as design goals. Reddit also appears to expect the redesign to nudge people toward content beyond the communities they already follow, although the company has published no evidence that the change will increase participation or time spent.
The announcement contains no advertising update, including no changes to ad placement, campaign tools, auction behavior, pricing, or measurement. That omission leaves budget implications unresolved: teams have no disclosed data for shifting spend or forecasting impressions, and should treat the release as a product test rather than a proven performance signal.
Over the next few weeks, the practical test will be whether people use “For You” to find and join relevant communities, or simply return to “Following.” Those behaviors will determine whether the redesign expands discovery without alienating users who prefer a controlled feed.
